The Xbox Games Showcase was a spectacle, with Gears of War: E-Day taking center stage as a potential game that could showcase the Unreal Engine 5's capabilities. The game's promise of large-scale, varied, and detailed environments without pop-in, crisp image quality, and extensive ray-traced lighting via hardware Lumen is an exciting prospect. The Coalition, the developers behind the game, have had seven years to work on this title, allowing them to start from an empty hard drive and create a technical masterpiece. The game's performance during the showcase was impressive, with a solid 60fps and prominent environmental damage, but it remains to be seen how it will perform on console when it releases on October 6th.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, another UE5 title, is also set to release soon and promises to take a noticeable step beyond what 343 Industries achieved with Halo Infinite. The game's vivid visuals and intensive overhauls in materials, lighting, and cinematics are a welcome sight, and the performance has improved markedly since its first showing. The Xbox summer showcase also featured footage from other games, including Clockwork Revolution, Persona 6, a new Senua, Metro 2039, and Crazy Taxi.
The Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console is a fan service for long-time Xbox players, showcasing the hardware engineering that went into the original Series X. The translucent green shell provides a novel look at the console's internals, with elements of the cooling system, the optical drive, and power delivery all visible. The controller also has visibly vibrating motors in the handles and triggers. However, the anniversary model doesn't include 2TB of storage, which is a shame, but given the huge increase in flash memory prices, it's understandable.
The Xbox Showcase was an energizing series of announcements, but it still doesn't answer the question of what Microsoft is aiming for with their new, confusing approach to game exclusivity. Nevertheless, if the objective was just to show footage of exciting upcoming games, consider the box ticked. Personally, I think the Xbox Games Showcase was a success, and the games and hardware on display were a testament to the power of the Unreal Engine 5 and the Xbox Series X. What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for the gaming industry to evolve with the advancements in technology. In my opinion, the Xbox Games Showcase has set the bar high for the rest of the industry, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for gaming.
