Bear Bait's Susquehannock Trail Adventure: Day 5 - A Bear-y Encounter (2026)

The Susquehannock Trail Thru Hike: A Journey's End and a New Beginning

As I embark on the final leg of my Susquehannock Trail adventure, a sense of anticipation and reflection fills my mind. Day five marks the culmination of an incredible journey, and I'm eager to share my thoughts and experiences with you.

The Home Stretch

With no leg pain to speak of, I set out on the last 17 miles with a spring in my step. However, a minor hiccup presented itself in the form of a dead Nitecore battery, leaving me without a reliable power source. Nonetheless, I remained optimistic, knowing that the end was within reach.

The hike up Wild Boy Run was a breeze, and I soon found myself navigating a series of gentle hills. Stony Run welcomed me with its serene beauty, a familiar sight along the trail. Lichen-covered rocks and babbling streams accompanied me, creating an atmosphere of tranquility.

A Bear-y Encounter

As I entered the Hammersley Wilderness Area, an unexpected encounter awaited. Just beyond the welcoming sign, a bear appeared, walking on two feet like a clumsy human. The encounter was brief, as the bear scampered off down the trail. But fate had it that we crossed paths again a few minutes later.

From that moment on, I became more vigilant, aware of the potential for further bear sightings. And sure enough, my instincts proved correct as I spotted three more bears along the ten-mile stretch. It was a thrilling experience, and one that added an element of excitement to the final leg of my journey.

Navigating the Home Stretch

As I approached the final few miles, the dry forest atop the plateau offered a different kind of beauty. Streams and creeks carved their way through the rock, creating a picturesque landscape. However, with my phone and Nitecore battery both dead, I relied on my navigation skills, a skill set honed during my time in the Navy.

Looking down from the plateau, I spotted Cross Fork, my final destination. It was a moment of triumph and satisfaction, knowing that I had completed the Susquehannock Trail.

Securing the STS

With the STS secured, I made my way to a nearby bar to recharge my phone and myself. My first-ever Iron City Lager, a Pennsylvania classic, was a well-deserved treat. A chance encounter with a retired Machinist Mate named John, now a trail angel, led to a delightful ride back to Northern Gateway.

We shared stories of our Navy days, a common bond that brought us together. The trail had not only provided an incredible hiking experience but also fostered new connections and friendships.

Reflections and Takeaways

The Susquehannock Trail Thru Hike was an unforgettable adventure, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my journey with you. It's a testament to the fact that even with a full-time job, one can still find time to pursue their passions.

The trail offered a unique blend of beauty, challenge, and unexpected encounters. From the quiet serenity of Stony Run to the thrilling bear sightings, it was a journey filled with memorable moments.

As I reflect on my time on the trail, I'm left with a sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. It's a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the ones we least expect. So, get out there, explore, and embrace the wetness that comes with adventure!
