Olivia's Journey: From Strider to Strider Success

Anne Barnes, a former MotoAmerica motorcycle racer and cycling enthusiast, shares her daughter's journey from a curious baby to a confident Strider rider.

It's been a year and a half since we last checked in with Olivia's Strider journey, and what a journey it's been! From licking the bike to sending it, Olivia's exploration of her Strider has been a delightful adventure. But the real surprise came when she lost interest around her first birthday. As a parent, it was a shock to see my child show no enthusiasm for two wheels, especially given my own passion for cycling.

However, I never forced Olivia into any activities she didn't want to do. I wanted her to discover her own interests, and I was determined to provide her with the tools to pursue them. Once she started walking, her balance and perception amazed me. I knew that if she ever regained interest in the bike, she'd be ready to ride without the rocking base.

And regain interest she did! After a year-long hiatus, Olivia grabbed the handlebars, leaned the bike away from the wall, swung her leg over, and began to slowly scoot away. It was as if she had never left.

In the following weeks, Olivia's riding skills blossomed. She mastered standing and walking with the bike, eventually coasting with her feet up. We even got her a helmet, just in case! Her favorite trick became zipping down the hallway at top speed, lifting her feet, and effortlessly navigating around obstacles with jaw-dropping precision.

Olivia's calm and shy nature makes her Strider experience all the more fascinating. The bike has built her confidence, not only in her riding abilities but also in social interactions. At playgrounds and parks, Olivia's newfound riding skills have become an icebreaker, allowing her to connect with other kids, even without words.

One of the most memorable moments was at the Daytona 200. Olivia, equipped with a helmet and a demo Strider, confidently navigated a roped-off course, riding up and down wooden ramps. It was a testament to her growing confidence and love for bicycles.

As a parent, witnessing Olivia's journey has been incredibly rewarding. Beyond the sense of achievement and social interaction, the Strider has become a durable toy, a keepsake of her growth. Writing about her progress has been a joy, and I'm excited to see what new milestones she achieves on her Strider.

In conclusion, Olivia's Strider journey is a testament to the power of following one's interests. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected paths can lead to the most rewarding destinations.
